چکیده

When making design decisions in environmentally benign design and manufacture, the decision maker is often faced with extreme uncertainty. Due to a lack of understanding of the complex dynamics of environmental and societal systems, it is very difficult to judge the impact different design alternatives have on the environment, the economy and the society, especially in the distant future. In this paper, two formalisms are illustrated for making design decisions under extreme uncertainty. The formalisms are probability bounds analysis and infogap decision theory. We introduce the basic concepts for both formalisms, discuss the advantages and limitations, and identify under which circumstances they are useful in the context of design decision making. One can think of both decision methods as having a built-in sensitivity analysis allowing the decision maker to judge whether a decision can be made confidently based on the current information, or whether additional information needs to be gathered.

A Comparison of Probability Bounds Analysis and Sensitivity Analysis in Environmentally Benign Design and Manufacture

There is growing acceptance in the design community that two types of uncertainty exist: inherent variability and uncertainty that results from a lack of knowledge, which is variously referred to as imprecision, incertitude, irreducible uncertainty, and epistemic uncertainty. There is much less agreement on the appropriate means for representing and computing with these types of uncertainty. Pr...

Managing Multiple Sources of Epistemic Uncertainty in Engineering Decision Making

Managing uncertainty is an integral part of making well-informed engineering decisions. When formulating a design problem, many of the variables and models contain epistemic uncertainty, uncertainty due to lack of knowledge. If this lack of knowledge is significant, it may be advantageous to acquire additional information before making a design decision. In this paper, we develop a framework fo...

Considering the Info-gap Approach to Robust Decisions under Severe Uncertainty in the Context of Environmentally Benign Design

Information-Gap Decision Theory (IGDT), an approach to robust decision making under severe uncertainty, is considered in the context of a simple life cycle engineering example. IGDT offers a path to a decision in the class of problems where only a nominal estimate is available for some uncertain life cycle variable that affects performance, and where there is some unknown amount of discrepancy ...

Managing Environmentally Conscious in Designing Closed-loop Supply Chain for the Paper Industry

High amounts of waste paper are disposed of every year in Iran posing the health hazard and environmental damages instead of being recovered. Collection, recovery and proper disposal of waste paper without damaging the environment need to design an efficient closed-loop supply chain network. The main objective of this paper is introducing a bi-objective, multi-echelon, multi-product and single-...
